SMS Concept

Short Message Service (SMS) is the transmission of short text message from a mobile phone device or a software application to a mobile phone.

Message size: 160 characters and contain no images.

Supported: characters in language such as Chinese, Vietnamese, encoding or binary content (ringtones, pictures)

Sender ID: as a number, a text or a code, it depends on the country and network provider policy.

Split message: supplier has an ability to split a long message into multiple messages and bill it accordingly but it may or may not present to user as one long message.

DLR (delivery report): when user received the message, the supplier will send a delivery report back to the sender as a receipt. DLR is a key of QoS in SMS system, just like ASR in Voice, it is impossible to get 100% as the phone may be turned off or out of coverage area and that message is in queue.

Silent Message: a silent message can be sent to test the network connection quietly; it does not show up on a display or trigger any signal when received.

Block/ Spam Message: it depends on each mobile network provider; they will have their own rules/ guidelines to block/ allow this kind of message.

Sender Format: Long Code - Short Code - Alpha
